Open the site in a browser, but do not stop there. Browser cache can hide bad behavior, especially with 301 redirects.
Use command-line checks or header inspection in your browser dev tools. Confirm the exact status code, the Location header, and whether the redirect preserves the expected path and query string. Test on mobile networks too if your audience depends on them. Regional DNS differences and cached resolvers can expose issues you will not see on your own machine.
Also check email and subdomains before making broad DNS changes. Redirecting a domain should not accidentally break MX records, API subdomains, or staging hosts.
If the domain is not hosting a site and you just want to send users somewhere else, registrar forwarding can work. It is low effort and often fine for secondary domains, typo domains, or short campaign names.
The trade-off is control. You may not get full HTTPS coverage, path forwarding, header-level behavior, or consistent handling under load. For business-critical traffic, hosting-level redirects are more predictable.
Set DNS so the domain reaches the system that will issue the redirect. Install SSL on every source hostname that may receive HTTPS traffic. Use 301 for permanent moves. Redirect every domain variation to one final canonical URL. Then test headers, not just pages.
